Labor Day Weekend

The end of summer was filled with
kite flying....

cousin time, sand between the toes and fingers, screams of laughter, swimming, bike riding,
trampoline jumps, wonderful food.......

and bubbles.

Nice way to spend the warm windy days with family.

1st days of school

My girl is one year closer to going to the big school.
But for now PreK is caller her and I will enjoy that.

She actually started her first day, a day before her brother.

Which provided an opportunity to have one on one time with my big guy before his first day of school. A second grader.....

My boys biggest concern this morning was that his teacher had given him the wrong seating.
"I'm totally girl trapped!" he exclaimed this morning while getting ready for school. Two evenings ago, we attended the 'Meet Your Teacher Night' where my boy discovered he was sitting in between two girls. I guess being girl trapped is not a great thing for a second grade boy.

Bodily Noises

Boys are a different breed of species.
Being raised with sisters, I have learned by trial and error of raising my boy.
One of my boy's interests as of late is
Bodily noises.
Under arm pit noises, under the knee noises.
In fact when the fascination hit, it was nonstop.
My son would wake up making the noises and giggle with glee doing the noises as I tucked him into bed at night.
This week during a shopping spree, my boy decided to buy this with his allowance:

Of course my daughter had to have some as well.
Well you can guess that my house has not stopped with the bodily noises.

But I do have a confession. Last night I was chuckling with fascination as my husband and myself played with this FLaRp.

Our Colorado Retreat

This is our third year at the Baker's Cabin.
I love Estes Park, the mountains, the views.

Above is the front of the cabin and below is the view from behind its rooftop.

And this is the view from the deck sitting in the swing:

One thing I love about this cabin is how it easily entertains our crew:

Those boulders are the cabin's backyard. The kids will play for hours "climbing the mountain," and "exploring secret hideouts."
This was my view from in the cabin looking out watching our crew:

Just in life, our trip seemed to have many obstacles. Besides the one mentioned in
another post,
we had a vehicle in the shop for a few days since it sputtered up to the mountain cabin, a camera was lost (but then found), and then my daughter and I got lost while hiking (but found).
The above and below pics were taken before we got lost.
These little mishaps just add to the story of our life and our vacation.

It's only a sweet pea

Or is it?
I blame it on my garden
or on my lack on insight since we were on vacation.
But for whatever reason my daughter and cousins harvested what seemed to be a
innocent sweet pea from behind our Colorado cabin:
Turns out this plant is poisonous.
My little girl knows now to not eat anything except from our garden or grocery store.
Somehow our yearly trips to Estes always starts off rough.

More Colorado pics to come.

My girl is okay. The Estes Park ER staff was fabulous. She was better within 8 hours, and the next day you would never had known she was sick.

Wet works

The continuous rain didn't dampen our Fourth of July festivities.

Our family crew sat in the garage and waited for the rain to slow down and then
BOOM, the fireworks showed their splendor.

I was raised going to fireworks displays where fireworks were considered illegal.
It amazes me every year especially in my neighborhood how much people will spend
on the big professional fireworks.

Around 10:30 in the evening the rain had stopped and our neighborhood was one fireworks display in the sky. I literally turned a full 360 to see all the displays around me. AMAZING!

*******
I have to add my favorite conversation of the weekend with a recent high school grad.....
me: "So what college are you going to?"
recent grad: "Iowa State"
me: "Is that the school of the hawkeyes?"
hubby: "No that's University of Iowa."
recent grad: Oh, our school has 'hot guys'!"
Puzzled, I look at the recent grad.
Recent grad realizes I didn't say 'hot guys' and replies with hand over mouth,
"I'm so embarrassed."
I then translate in my head what was currently said, 'hawkeyes' = 'hot guys.'
Laughter ensues.

Berries

A few weeks ago my kids and I headed off to a local farm to
pick some yummy berries.

Those buckets of berries were gobbled up within a day or two.

Our blueberry bushes are about ready for picking.

If you are a local and love blackberries. Give me a shout out.
Gallons upon gallons of blackberries will be ripe in a few weeks.
I still have 0ver 20 cups of frozen berries from last years crop.
I would love to give some blackberries away.

15 years

It's been 15 years today that my hubby and I said our marriage vows.
15 years, seriously.
Where did those young kids go?

Boo boo head

This is one of many names my children have been calling each other that end with "head."

I sat down with them one afternoon to discuss

eliminating name calling from their daily activities.

I began by stating that calling each other names is not nice and hurtful.

My son with a tear in his eye, exclaimed "but you call us names."

Horrified, I asked what name I had called him and my son replied, "sweetie."

Sweetie, huh. My son doesn't like me calling him sweetie.
Deep Sigh.
*
Yesterday out of nowhere my daughter exclaimed,
"You can call me sunshine."
Sunshine it is.
She is my morning dose of sunshine.

Kudos to the home school moms out there.
I don't know how you do it.
Trying to show my little sunshine the correct way of writing letters is an impossible task.
Her way is the best way.
And getting my son to stay on task with his weekly math homework is killer.

Jayhawk Nostalgia

Picture by Nick Krug from ljworld.com

I'm a Kansas Jayhawk's basketball fan.

In college I was extreme.

I went to almost every game.

I would sit for hours waiting to get in, or better yet,

I would sit by some nice guy who sat for hours to get in.

I wore the Jayhawk tattoo on my cheek during the games.

I was thrown up during the Jayhawk cheer, before it got banned.

If the game was close near the end, I would close my eyes until I would hear cheers.

One of the games in the early 90's when we played Indiana, I nearly passed out for screaming so loud after Jacque Vaughn hit a three point shot winning the game.

yeah... that was me.

So yesterday when a friend of mine ask me if I wanted to go to last night's KU game,

I was on it!

Called my hubby, called the baby sitter.

Bam. I was going.

Nostalgia.

The last time I went to a KU game was after my daughter was born.

During the scoreboard introduction, I cried.

Yes, cried. Yes, I cry a lot since having kids, but during the intro to the start of the game?

Having kids, I forgot a piece of me.

I piece of me that loved sports, loved KU basketball.

It brought me to tears, because I remembered. I liked that part of me.

Last night I didn't cry, I had a lump in my throat during the introduction,

but I didn't cry. The intro is that good.

The game was great. I enjoyed it with some wonderful gals.

I love KU basketball.

I'm not the fanatic, like I once was.

I'm okay with that.

Memorable Christmas

I hope your Christmas was enjoyable and full of memories.
Ours was. Here's a recap:
Spent Christmas Eve at my sisters and did the traditional open gifts containing
pajamas and games.

Once everyone got into their pajamas we played games.
Then drove home to grandpas in the snow.
*
Christmas morning:
My kids woke up bright and early as usual ready to open their gifts.
The rest of the day was spent with my family (my sisters and their family).

My most memorable things about Christmas 09
1. Driving from my sisters to my dad's home. The roads had a layer of ice and then 5-6 inches of snow on the roads. We counted 20 cars in the ditches. My dad and husband pulled over a few times to help people stuck in the snow. A usually 25 minute drive was well over an hour.
2. My sister driving my van and her comment to her daughter. (Total inside joke)
3. Waking up the day after Christmas seeing my son attempting to disassemble his skateboard to make a snowboard. Sounded logical with all the snow outside.
4. My dad's response when I told him, my daughter wanted a pink toolbox, a real toolbox with tools like her dad's but only pink. My daughter's response once she opened the toolbox, "Where's some wood."
5. Returning home to find 2 -3 feet snow drifts in our driveway.

brrrr

It's our first official snowfall with a school closing.
Actually not much snow, maybe an inch or two
But absolutely freezing!
Today's high 13 degrees, Tonight's low -4

My son is currently playing outside in the snow.
My girl and I decided the warm house was a much better choice after 5 minutes outdoors.
I like to be warm.

The scene behind my kids Christmas card photo shoot

This is how our last minute Christmas card photo shoot went since I decided I didn't want any of the gazillion pictures that I have of my kids this past year.
In order of events:

3:15 Pick up son from school. Realize my daughter is asleep. Deep sigh.
3:30 Arrive home. Tell son that I need a big favor and would like to do a photo shoot after he relaxes and eat a snack. Try to wake up daughter. No use.
4:00 Place props and camera in car.
4:10 Tell son to get on his photo shoot clothes. Realizing that he will grumble about the outfit, I immediately tell him that he can change his clothes after the photo shoot, and he will get something sweet for his modeling job.
4:12 Pick daughter up from her sleeping state and place her on the toilet. Hoping that she will go since I know she will need to in the near future. No such luck.
4:14 Dress, brush and curl daughter's hair while she is laying on her bed still wanting to sleep.
4:15 Load kids in the car.
4:25 Unload props at an uninhabited home.
4:26 Kids complain its too cold.
4:27 Daughter says she need to go the bathroom. Exhibit A:

4:28 Attempt to help daughter use the bathroom outside. Again no such luck.
4:30 Quickly take some pictures.
4:32 My heart races as a cop car siren goes off. I think I'm in trouble since I am trespassing on private property. The cop car races by. Whew.
4:33 Load up kids, props, and camera in car.
4:34 After driving 1/2 mile, daughter pipes up and says she is not buckled.
4:34 2 second later Pull over and buckle her car seat.
4:44 Pull into home, let daughter use the bathroom.
4:46 Arrive at gas station, fill up, and let kids choose a sweet of their choice.
4:50 Let kids eat a donut before dinner.
Let's see if I can make lemonade out of lemons. To be continued...........

Big weekend

We just came off a big weekend of events for my side of the family.
First my dad turned the big 60.
He is one of the most loyal and dedicated men I know.
Life has not been easy for him, but he continues to endure.
I love him for that.
He truly is a great man. I can't believe he's 60. How did that happen?
We had the whole day planned including frisbee golf with his daughters.
I provided the entertainment.
(translation- throwing frisbee in the complete opposite direction, numerous times)
I've never been coordinated with a frisbee :)
****
Second, my niece got baptized.
She has been so excited that she has been telling everyone. I mean EVERYONE.
All her cousins, aunts, uncles came to her special day including grandma and grandpa.

My brother-n-law had the privilege of baptizing his own daughter.
It was a tearjerker. He was so proud and it showed.
My niece just beamed. God's definitely got a plan for this sweet child.
Love you guys - Enjoyed my time - Jen

More apple picking

This weekend we went to pick some more apples.
This time around I didn't bring a camera.
We picked 3x the amount as last time.
Whew! I am going to be busy!
Here are some shots from the first apple picking of the season.

Hope you are having a great weekend. Blessings - Jen

Oh to be back

One of our favorite
things we did in Colorado
was going on the tram up the mountain
to feed the super friendly and fat chipmunks.

I saw the presence of God

A friend of mine told me

that whenever she is in Colorado

She feels near to God.

Yeah, you do.

My family, dad, and sister's family spent the week in Estes Park, Colorado.

Absolutely Beautiful!

This was our rustic cabin retreat.

It had an amazing view.
The window pane shot was taken from the living room of the cabin in the morning.
This was the backyard landscape.

The cabin's backyard was literally a playground for the kids to climb, swing, and play pretend in the "caves."

Less than 1/2 mile down from the cabin was Estes Lake. We went there daily to either jog, bike, fish, ride a boat or play on the playground.

We also did some sight seeing and took a train from Georgetown to Silver Plume, CO.

Here's some shots of a lovely church that I fell in love with.
Oh to be back there again.
I'm so tempted to move.
Thanks Jenny and the Baker family for letting us stay
at your Colorado retreat.
It's a little bit of heaven here on earth.
